The Rivers State Government has officially approved the recruitment of 5,000 teachers into the state civil service as part of a renewed effort to strengthen the education sector across the state. The approval was granted by the Rivers State Executive Council at its second meeting of 2026, presided over by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, with Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma-Odu in attendance.
Briefing journalists after the meeting held at Government House, Port Harcourt, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honor Sirawoo, disclosed that the recruitment exercise is aimed at addressing critical manpower gaps, improving efficiency, and raising the quality of education in public schools across Rivers State.
Important Notice: While the council approval has been granted, the actual recruitment exercise has not yet commenced. Interested candidates are advised to keep monitoring the official Rivers State Government portal and this page for updates on when applications will open.
According to Dr. Sirawoo, the 5,000 approved teachers will be distributed across two tiers of the public education system:
- 3,000 teachers will be deployed to basic and primary schools
- 2,000 teachers will be assigned to post-primary (secondary) institutions
This distribution is specifically targeted at strengthening service delivery in critical areas of the education system and improving learning outcomes across all levels in the state.
Dr. Sirawoo was emphatic that the recruitment process will be strictly merit-based. He stated:
“It should be noted that the process for the employment of the approved 5,000 persons will be carefully managed to guarantee transparency and merit.”
The Commissioner for Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment, Dr. Chisom Gbali, described the council’s approval as a major boost for youth employment and economic productivity in Rivers State. He assured that his ministry would collaborate closely with the Ministry of Education to ensure the process follows established standards.
Dr. Gbali also confirmed that successful candidates will undergo adequate training and orientation programmes after employment before being deployed to schools.
This recruitment is part of the Fubara administration’s broader commitment to workforce expansion and job creation. With this latest approval, the total number of persons employed under the present administration has risen to approximately 9,500. Previous recruitment exercises included:
