The Nigerian Navy Basic Training School (NNBTS) has specific educational requirements for different entry categories. Applicants must meet these requirements to qualify for recruitment. Below is a breakdown of the categories and their respective academic qualifications.

General Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be Nigerian citizens by birth.
- Age limit varies by category:
- 18 – 22 years for School Certificate holders.
- 18 – 26 years for applicants with higher qualifications such as NCE, OND, and professional certifications.
- Candidates must present WAEC, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB scratch cards at recruitment centers.
- Applicants with additional qualifications such as OND and NCE must provide their statement of results.
Educational Requirements by Category
A – Engineering & Technical Specializations
- A1 (Marine Engineer Artificer – MEA): 5 credits in SSCE (English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry). OND is an added advantage.
- A2 (Weapon Electrical Artificers – WEA): Same as A1.
- A3 (Aircraft Engineering Artificers – Airframe Engine): Diploma in Airframe & Engine (ICAO certified) and 5 SSCE credits (English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry).
- A4 (Aircraft Engineering Artificers – Avionics & Aircraft Electrics – AEA-AA/EEE): Certificate/Diploma in Aircraft Electrics & Avionics (ICAO recognized) with 5 SSCE credits.
- A5 (Shipwright Artificers – SHIPA): 5 SSCE credits (English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry). OND in Mechanical/Electrical/Welding Engineering is an advantage.
B – Mechanics & Technicians
- B1 (Marine Engineer Mechanics – MEM): 5 SSCE credits (English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry). Technical bias or City & Guilds/Trade Test II is beneficial.
- B2 (Weapon Electrical Mechanics – WEM): Same as B1.
- B3 (Automobile Mechanics – AM): Same as B1.
- B4 (Welding): 4 passes in SSCE with credit in English. Relevant Trade Certificate is mandatory.
C – Communication & IT
- C1 (Communications): 5 SSCE credits including English, Mathematics, Physics.
- C2 (IT Technicians): OND (Lower Credit) in Computer Studies/Science, with 5 SSCE credits (English, Mathematics, Physics). Industrial certification is an added advantage.
D – Naval Operations & Support
- D1 (Seaman): 5 SSCE credits (English, Mathematics).
- D2 (Survey Recorders): OND (Lower Credit) in Land Survey, Cartography, GIS, plus 5 SSCE credits.
- D3 (Sportsmen/Women): 4 SSCE credits including English and evidence of national or international sports participation.
- D4 (Physical Training Instructors): 5 SSCE credits including English, with sports participation evidence.
- D5 (Chaplain Assistants): 5 SSCE credits (English, Christian Religious Knowledge) with 2 years clergy experience and recommendation from two clerics.
- D6 (Imam Assistants): 5 SSCE credits (English, Arabic, Islamic Religious Knowledge), 2 years experience as an Imam, and cleric recommendations.
- D7 (Firemen): 5 SSCE credits including English.
- D8 (Painting): 4 SSCE passes with credit in English. Trade certificate required.
E – Administrative & Technical Support
- E1 (Writers): 5 SSCE credits including English, Mathematics, Accounts/Economics, and Computer Science. OND/NCE in related fields is an advantage.
- E2 (Store Assistants): 5 SSCE credits including English, Mathematics, Economics. Computer skills are advantageous.
- E3 (Caterers): 5 SSCE credits (English, Home Management/Food Nutrition). Experience as a waiter/steward is beneficial.
- E4 (Ordnance): 5 SSCE credits including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry.
- E5 (Project Technicians): OND (Lower Credit) in relevant fields like Architecture, Civil Engineering, etc., plus 5 SSCE credits.
- E6 (Tailoring): 4 SSCE passes with credit in English. Relevant certificate or experience is mandatory.
- E7 (Carpentry), E8 (Plumbing), E9 (Masonry), E10 (Electrical Technician), E11 (Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Technology): 4 SSCE passes with credit in English. Relevant Trade Certificates are mandatory.
F – Medical & Health Services
- F1 (Medical Assistants): 5 SSCE credits (English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Health Science, Physics).
- F2 (Health Technicians): OND (Lower Credit) or professional qualification in relevant health fields with 5 SSCE credits (English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Health Science).
G – Music & Entertainment
- G (Bandsmen): 5 SSCE credits including English. Must be proficient in playing musical instruments.
H – Driving & Mechanical Support
- H (Drivers/Mechanics): 5 SSCE credits including English. Mechanic apprenticeship certificate, valid driver’s license, and experience proof required.
J – Media & Journalism
- J (Journalists): OND (Lower Credit) in Mass Communication, Journalism, Photography, Printing Technology, Public Relations, or Graphic Arts. Must have 5 SSCE credits including English and Mathematics.
K – Nursing & Healthcare
- K (Nurses): RN qualification or double qualification in specialized nursing fields (e.g., A&E, Pediatrics, Ophthalmic). Must have 5 SSCE credits (English, Mathematics, Biology/Health Science, Physics, Chemistry).
N – Education
- N (Education): NCE in Arts, Science, or Technical subjects. Must have 5 SSCE credits including English and Mathematics. TRCN certification is an added advantage.
