The Rivers State Government has not published an official shortlist of candidates for its 2026 teacher recruitment. The state approved 5,000 teachers in January 2026 and accepted applications from 1 to 13 April 2026, but the reports reviewed do not show a released list or a screening date. Until the state or the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB) publishes one, there is no confirmed list to check.

Short-listing is free. The Rivers State Government said the 2026 exercise is free and merit-based. Do not pay anyone who claims your name is on a list or offers to secure a slot, and treat any link or list that does not come from an official state channel as unconfirmed.

The January approval announcement did not name SUBEB, the Teaching Service Commission or any other body to carry out the exercise, so it is not clear which agency will publish the list. Check the Rivers State Government, RSUBEB and the Ministry of Education channels.

The April 2026 Application

The notice said that the exercise was open to teachers for public primary and secondary schools, in every subject area. Applications ran from 8:00 am on 1 April to 4:00 pm on 13 April 2026, through an online form, and late submissions may not have been considered. The requirements reported were:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Education, or a bachelor’s degree in a teaching subject plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, for secondary school posts.
  • At least an NCE for primary school posts.
  • A valid Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) certificate.
  • NYSC completion or an exemption certificate.
  • Good communication and classroom management skills, and computer literacy.

The statement said selection would be strictly on merit and that only shortlisted candidates would be contacted for the next stage. No test, interview or date was published in the reports reviewed.

The RSUBEB Batch of 1,000 Teachers

A separate batch concluded in 2026. RSUBEB recruited 1,000 teachers for public primary and junior secondary schools, picked from more than 5,000 applicants in a competitive process that began in 2023 under the previous board and was completed by the current chairman, Hon. Sam Oge, with the Governor’s approval. The new teachers received a two-day orientation in Port Harcourt on civil service rules, classroom management and professional conduct. The Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor, directed that rural-to-urban transfer requests be rejected, and Oge warned that all teachers must resume at their assigned schools. If you applied in 2023, this may be the list that concerns you.

How to Check for a Rivers Teachers Shortlist

  1. Watch the official Rivers State Government HERE and RSUBEB announcements, and the email address you used on the application.
  2. When a list is published, open it from the official source and search for your name.
  3. Read the instructions on screening dates, venue, and documents.
  4. Do not rely on a list from a website that does not show an official notice, a date or a signatory.

If you see a claim that a list is available on a particular website or portal, confirm it with the Rivers State Government or RSUBEB before you act on it. A genuine list will carry an official notice, a date and a named signatory.

Documents to Prepare

No official screening checklist has been published for 2026. Teacher exercises in Nigeria usually require the items below, so keep them ready and confirm the list when a notice appears.

  • Original and photocopied academic and professional certificates.
  • TRCN certificate and NYSC discharge or exemption certificate.
  • Valid identification, such as a NIN slip, voter’s card, driver’s licence or international passport.
  • A printout of your application confirmation.
  • Recent passport photographs.
  • Birth certificate or age declaration, and local government of origin certificate.

The state has framed the 5,000 posts as part of a drive to improve the quality of education, with merit as the guiding principle. That suggests a screening stage of some kind before appointment, but no format has been announced, so avoid paying for past questions or coaching that claims to know the test.

What to Do While You Wait

  • Keep your email and phone number active.
  • Revise your teaching subjects, English and numeracy, for a possible test.
  • Make sure that your TRCN registration is up to date.
  • Ignore anyone who sells lists, slots or early information.
