NECO GCE Registration 2026 Closes Monday 26 October: Late Fee and What to Do Now
Last updated:
Normal NECO GCE registration for the 2026 SSCE External closes on Monday 26 October 2026 at 12:00 midnight. After that date, the National Examinations Council (NECO) will charge a ₦5,000 late fee on every registration until Tuesday 3 November 2026.
The exam itself starts on Wednesday 4 November and ends on Saturday 21 November 2026. With the normal window now down to its final days, candidates who have not paid or completed their registration should do so before the weekend, when portals and registration centres are usually at their busiest.
Registration deadlines at a glance
| Stage | Date | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Normal registration closes | Monday 26 October 2026, 12:00 midnight | ₦27,000 plus charges |
| Late registration | Tuesday 27 October – Tuesday 3 November 2026 | ₦27,000 + ₦5,000 |
| Exam period | Wednesday 4 – Saturday 21 November 2026 | — |
What the deadline means for you
Registering on or before Monday keeps the cost at ₦27,000, the SSCE External fee listed on NECO’s payment page (payment code 8202), plus Remita and bank charges. NECO does not refund registration fees, so candidates should check their subjects and personal details carefully before paying.
Missing Monday’s deadline does not shut you out of the exam, but it costs more. From Tuesday 27 October, the late fee adds ₦5,000 to each registration. The late window closes on Tuesday 3 November, the day before the first paper, so candidates who miss it will have to wait for the next SSCE External cycle. Late registration also leaves little time to fix mistakes on your NIN, photograph or subjects before the exam starts.
Why you should not wait until Monday night
Every NECO registration needs a valid National Identification Number (NIN). The portal checks your NIN before it lets you continue, and candidates whose NIN details do not match their other documents often lose time correcting them. If your NIN slip has a spelling error or a different date of birth, fix that first, or your registration may not go through before the deadline.
Payment is made through Remita, and payments sometimes take a while to reflect, especially when many people are paying at the same time. Registering a day or two early gives you room to sort out any payment problems while the normal fee still applies.
You will also need a recent passport photograph and, where required, fingerprint capture at an accredited registration centre. Your printed photocard must be signed and stamped by an eligible referee, such as a civil servant or a school principal. Arranging this early avoids a last-minute rush.
How to register before the deadline
- Visit www.neco.gov.ng and click the SSCE External link, which opens ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng.
- Create an account with a working email address and phone number.
- Enter your NIN and fill in your bio-data exactly as it appears on your NIN record.
- Choose your exam town, centre and subjects.
- Upload your passport photograph and complete fingerprint capture where required.
- Pay the fee through Remita.
- Print your photocard and registration slip, and get the photocard attested by an eligible referee.
NECO allows one correction to your details after upload, so check everything before you submit. Do not register more than once. NECO treats multiple registration as malpractice, and it can lead to the cancellation of the whole result.
Checklist before you start
- Your NIN slip or NIN number, with your name and date of birth matching your other documents.
- A working email address and phone number you can access during the exam period.
- A recent passport photograph with a plain white background.
- Enough money for the ₦27,000 fee plus Remita and service charges.
- The list of subjects you need, checked against the admission or job requirements you are working towards.
After you register
Keep your printed photocard and registration slip safe. You will need the photocard to enter the exam hall on every paper day, and staff at the centre will check it against your face and fingerprint. NECO runs objective papers on computer and essay and practical papers on paper, so arrive at least one hour early on computer-based days. Shortly before the exam, check the official timetable on www.neco.gov.ng again for any late changes to dates or times.
Who should register
The SSCE External is meant for private candidates who are no longer in school. It suits those who need to make up a failed subject, often English Language or Mathematics, before admission screening, and those who need an extra subject for a change of course. It also serves anyone who needs an O’Level result for recruitment exercises or further study. You can register for only the subjects you need. The 2026 timetable covers 16 subjects, including English Language, General Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics and Government.
The full day-by-day timetable, with paper codes and times, is in our NECO GCE timetable 2026 guide. Candidates who need the result for this year’s admission should also keep an eye on their JAMB CAPS profile, since O’Level results must be uploaded before institutions can offer admission.
Results
NECO has not announced a release date for the 2026 SSCE External results. As a guide, the 2025 November/December results came out on 3 February 2026, about seven weeks after the last paper. You can check them online with a result token through our NECO result checker guide.
Beware of fake registration agents
Register only on the official NECO portal or at an accredited centre. Ignore anyone who offers to register you for less than the official fee, promises “special centres” or sells exam “expo”. These offers are scams, and paying for leaked questions can cost you your result.
