How UNN’s Cut-Off Mark System Works
UNN does not operate a single fixed cut-off mark. Instead, a multi-layered evaluation process determines admission:
Level 1 – JAMB general cut-off (160): The minimum UTME score that makes you eligible to register for UNN’s Post-UTME screening. Scoring exactly 160 qualifies you to apply, but it does not guarantee admission to any specific course.
Level 2 – Post-UTME performance: All candidates eligible for Post-UTME must register and sit the screening exercise. Post-UTME performance carries significant weight in the final aggregate.
Level 3 – Aggregate ranking: After Post-UTME, all candidates for each department are ranked by aggregate score. Departments admit candidates starting from the highest scorer until all spaces are filled. The lowest admitted candidate’s aggregate becomes the effective departmental cut-off for that year.
Critical point: UNN does not release a fixed departmental cut-off mark before admissions. The effective cut-off for each department is only known after admission concludes, when you can see the lowest score admitted into that department.

UNN’s Three-Tier Admission System
UNN follows the federal university admission framework with three tiers:

UNN Post-UTME Requirements
- First choice: UNN must be your first-choice institution during JAMB registration
- Minimum JAMB score: 160 and above. This makes you eligible for Post-UTME registration
- Age: Must be at least 16 years as recognized by JAMB
- O-Level results: Minimum of five (5) credit passes in relevant subjects obtained in not more than two sittings
- Direct Entry: Must have a certificate from an accredited institution with a minimum of lower credit
- Registration: Register through the official UNN admissions portal at unn.edu.ng when Post-UTME opens
Strategies to Improve Your UNN Admission Chances
- Aim well above the minimum: For competitive courses, scoring at or near the departmental minimum puts you in a very precarious position. Aim 30–50 points above the estimated threshold.
- Prepare seriously for Post-UTME: Post-UTME carries 40% of the aggregate. A candidate with 240 JAMB and 80% Post-UTME will produce a stronger aggregate than one with 300 JAMB and 50% Post-UTME.
- Choose your course strategically: If your JAMB score is around 180–200 and Medicine is your target, consider Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Rehabilitation, or Nutrition, which have lower effective thresholds in the same college.
- Strong O-Level results matter: Missing a required O-Level credit for your chosen course means disqualification at screening, regardless of your aggregate. Verify all required subjects for your course before applying.
- Apply for JUPEB if unsuccessful: UNN’s Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) program allows successful candidates to gain Direct Entry admission into 200-level without rewriting JAMB.
